Jonathan gazed out the window. Still no sign of Laura or the cops. He had been taking a drag from his cigar, his eyes on the roof with the two magazines spread on his laps—one was a cover while the other was his actual reading material— watching the smoke dissipate in the air. He was a hypocrite. And he knew it. He glanced out the window a second time for any sign of the cops. He took a quick glance at the reflective window to adjust his hair a little. The receipt for the new humidifier he had purchased awhile back still sat on the table. If this was his time, he didn’t want the cops or folks in the ‘hood thinking he was some junkie. He was a Believer. And a disciplinarian. The way of the Lord needed to be enforced. And to do that, he needed courage. The courage that could only be fired up by a surge of nicotine. He took another drag from his cigar.

He wasn’t a junkie. He wasn’t bad. But The Way required it. If he were to carry out the teachings of the Good Book, he needed the cigar and its nicotine boost. The new humidifier kept running, something he didn’t like but he had to adapt to it in order to shape his PR. He loved the Lord, he told himself, laughing at the mental image. Of course, he knew he would fry in hell.

The odor from the humidifier slowly filled the room, assaulting his lungs with its cigar scent. He had sworn to wait until Laura or the cops showed up, spoke with him, and departed before he smoked. However, as he had done with his promise to marry her, he broke this solemn vow too. His mind circled back to Love Gladwell. She was a sweet lady. A fine cook. And a good friend. A very good friend… Jonathan shook his head as he flipped through the Playboy magazine. However, they hadn’t part on good terms. She was going to expose him. It was a shame what happened to her though. Someone had bugged her car, messed with her brake pads.

“Someone,” Jonathan said, laughing. He was definitely going to fry in hell. He puffed his cigar, waiting, secretly hoping that this time Laura wouldn’t really report him to the cops.

After Loomis dropped Mack off, he raced home, gunning the car at breakneck speed. He had dialed Susan’s number, but she wasn’t picking up.

“Come on, come on…” Loomis said.

After getting home, he dashed into his room, bringing out his passport. He was on the phone with a travel agent right away, booking a flight to Tennessee. At the airport, Loomis made several calls. One of the calls went to Frudge. It was the least one Loomis expected would go well.

“Loomis, good thing you called, you’re up for surgery tomorrow. New patient, needs neurosurgery—”

“I’m afraid, I can’t make it sir…”

The line went silent for a while. Frudge’s voice came back as the old man cleared his throat, his voice going suddenly quiet.
